On Tuesday, the House of Representatives will vote on a bill to address the pervasive issue of sexual harassment in scientific disciplines.
A recent report of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine highlighted widespread sexual harassment in the academic workplace, and this demands our attention. Continued failure to address this serious problem will result in women and individuals from vulnerable groups abandoning the field of science or choosing non-science careers, thereby depriving budding and accomplished scientists of their deserved opportunities and the nation of their important contributions.
The Combating Sexual Harassment in Science Act of 2019 is an opportunity to address this problem head on and move toward eliminating sexual misconduct in academia. Sexual harassment harms scientists and limits scientific innovation.
